Gynaecomastia
Gynaecomastia refers to the abnormal enlargement of male breast tissue, which can occur in one breast (unilateral) or both breasts (bilateral).
This condition is common in men of all ages and can be caused by a variety of factors, including:
Hormonal changes
Weight gain
Genetic predispositions
Medical conditions such as liver disease
Certain medications
Use of non-prescription or recreational drugs, including anabolic steroids and marijuana
Gynaecomastia can lead to emotional distress and affect a man's body image. The excess breast tissue may also cause the breasts to loose and result in the stretching of the areola (the darker skin surrounding the nipple).
In certain cases, gynaecomastia can be managed with non-surgical treatments, such as adjusting medications or addressing the underlying hormonal imbalance. However, for some men, surgery to remove the excess breast tissue may be the most effective treatment option. There are two components to address in gynaecomastia which are reduction of excess adipose tissue, and reduction of excess glandular tissue. Dr. Cheng uses surgical resection and liposuction to address both issues in gynaecomastia surgery.
